Woldemar
Neufeld
American/Canadian
1909-2002
Woldemar
Neufeld was born in Russia and emigrated to Canada in 1924. Neufeld
studied at the Ontario College of Art in the early 1930s--exhibiting
at local shows--before travelling to Cleveland to study at the
Cleveland Institute of Art. In 1945, Neufeld moved from Cleveland
to New York City, becoming known as the "Artist Laureate
of the East River" for his paintings of New York City scenes
and landmarks. Although he opened a studio in Connecticut and
frequently returned to Canada to paint, Neufeld maintained a
studio in New York City until 1980. He exhibited at the Art Institute
of Chicago, the American Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists,
the Silvermine Guild, and numerous other venues. His work is
in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Museum of the City
of New York, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and many others.
