Thomas Hart Benton
American
1889-1975

Thomas Hart Benton, along with John Steuart Curry and Grant Wood, was a pioneer in the American Regionalist movement. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and spent time in Paris and New York. In the 1920s, Benton rejected modernism and abstraction in favor of representaional paintings of the American Scene. In 1935, Benton returned to the Midwest to teach at the Kansas City Art Institute. He remained in Kansas until his death. Benton's paintings and prints, owned by major museums and private collectors, are quintessential examples of American regionalism.
