Steven Trefonides
American
b. 1926

Steven Trefonides is a well-known Boston painter and photographer. He studied at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, the Vesper George School of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. At SMFA Trefonides was influenced by Karl Zerbe and David Aronson and during the 1950s his work reflected the techniques of Boston Expressionists such as Zerbe, Jack Levine, Aronson, Arthur Polonsky, Jason Berger, Alfred Duca, and Bernard Chaet, among many others. The recipient of Tiffany and Fulbright grants, Trefonides' work may be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Currier Museum of Art; the de Cordova Museum; the Cape Cod Museum of Art; the Wadsworth Athenaeum, and many others.
