Robert Vickrey
American
b. 1926

Robert Vickrey is considered one of the pre-eminent realist artists working today. Early in his career, Vickrey painted covers for Time Magazine, ultimately completing seventy-seven covers by the late 1960s. Robert Vickrey has produced only a small body of prints--his favorite medium is egg tempera---though both his prints and paintings combine elements of surrealism, realism, and genre painting, often with a haunting and dreamlike composition. Acccording to the Smithsonian, "He paints meticulously detailed images using egg tempera, but the contrived arrangements of figures and austere landscape elements reflect Vickrey's interest in transforming outmoded social and cultural symbols into forms that menace the individual." Vickrey's work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney, and the Corcoran Gallery, among many others.
