Moses
Soyer
American
1899-1974
Moses Soyer,
an important social realist painter, draughtsman, and printmaker.
was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States in 1912.
He was the brother of Raphael and Isaac Soyer, both well-known
artists. Soyer studied with Ash Can School artists Robert Henri
and George Bellows and became a WPA artist and muralist during
the depression. Following the depression and World War II, despite
trends toward abstractionism, Soyer remained devoted to representational
painting and drawing, typically choosing the human figure as
his subject. Soyer was elected to the National Academy in 1963.
His work is in major public and private collections.
