Joseph Delaney
American
1904-1981

Joseph Delaney, an important African-American artist and brother of artist Beauford Delaney, was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1904. After traveling around the country during his early years, often as a hobo, Delaney moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League with Thomas Hart Benton. Benton's influence led to Delaney's lifelong commitment to technical fundamentals and the desire to depict the American scene. Beginning in the 1930s, Delaney exhibited at the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit where he created a number of portrait drawings. Delaney's work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Students' League, the National Academy of Design, the Studio Museum of Harlem, and many other venues. His work is in major public and private collections.
