Grace
Hartigan
American
b. 1922
Grace Hartigan,
a close friend of de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Milton Avery,
and Adolph Gottlieb, was one of the early participants in the
abstract expressionist movement and one of its only female participants.
In the '50s, Hartigan began to develop her own unique style that
employed figurative sensibilities. In 1958, she was the only
woman chosen by the Museum of Modern Art to participate in "The
New American Painting" exhibition. Hartigan's work is in
major public and private collections, including the Museum of
Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, The Hirshhorn Museum,
and countless others.
