Francis
De Erdely
American
1904-1959
Francis
De Erdely was a noted Los Angeles, California artist who was
a figure and genre painter and draughtsman. He was born in Hungary,
studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Budapest and the Sorbonne
and the l'Ecole de Louvre in Paris. He left Europe, and the ravages
of World War II, in 1939 and settled in California. De Erdely
was strongly influenced by his Academic training as well as by
his experiences both during the War and as an immigrant in the
United States. His paintings and drawings typically feature immigrants,
working class people, and minorities. They invariably show extraordinary
technical expertise. Francis De Erdely's work is found in numerous
museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the
De Young Museum, the Pasadena Art Institute, and the Seattle
Art Museum. De Erdely taught at the University of Southern California
for many years.
