Dox
Thrash
American
1893-1965
Dox Thrash
was an important African-American artist, painter, and printmaker.
He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and settled in Philadelphia
in 1929. During the depression, Thrash joined a printmaking workshop
sponsored by the WPA and developed the carborundum printmaking
technique. Thrash was also a noted painter. Thrash's subjects
varied from depression-era social realism to landscapes featuring
ramshackle buildings and barns, often of his native Georgia.
This painting (oil paintings are rarely available) is an outstanding
example of Thrash's landscape work.
