Roland Dorcely
Haitian
b. 1930

Roland Dorcely was an important member of Haiti's avant-garde in the 1950s. Dorcely, along with Luckner Lazard, Dieudonne Cedor and others, broke from the Centre d'Art to form the "Foyer des Arts Plastiques." In the 1940s and '50s, Dorcely traveled to Paris to study with Fernand Leger and Andre Masson. His work has been exhibited throughout the world and is in the collections of the Musee d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (see page 289 of Barr's Painting and Sculpture in the Museum of Modern Art 1929-1967). This painting, showing the strong influence of Leger, was painted in Paris, probably in the 1950s. The stretcher bears a label from "La Galerie '18'" in Paris.
