Benjamin Rowland

1904-1972

Benjamin Rowland studied at Harvard University, earning a Ph.D. in 1930. He became an important authority on Asian art, authoring seminal works such as Art and Architecture in India, Art in East and West, The Classical Tradition in Western Art, and the Pelican History of Art's volume on India. In 1960 he was appointed the Gleason Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard. In addtion to being a renowned scholar, Rowland was an accomplished artist -- influenced by the Boston Expressionist movement -- with exhibitions at the Whitney Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Detroit Institute of Art. He held several solo exhibitions at Doll and Richards Gallery in Boston in the 1950s and 1960s (where this painting was exhibited). His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Detroit Institute of Art; and the Fogg Museum.
